Review of The Hate U Give (2018) by Emma C — 09 Nov 2018
The highlight of the movie seemed to be the actors, which were very skilled at bringing their characters to life. I couldn't find a bad one in the bunch. At times, however, the script failed to provide lines that would have made this movie less of an after-school special and more worthy of an Oscar nomination, which I assume it will get anyway.
I cried several times, so the emotion was still on target. Life in the ghettto appeared to be marred by contradictions; people were both the perpetrators of as well as the victims of violence. Having been involved with some BLM protests here in Atlanta, I wish they had included the sheer NUMBER of activists we used to get in the streets to reflect the movement's size, but I suppose they needed to keep things small enough to fit in a studio.
Overall, with a better script, faster timing and a slightly shorter length, this would have been riveting. Instead, audiences will have to make do with merely fantastic.
