Review of The Hate U Give (2018) by Lydia G — 09 Oct 2018

I really wanted to come out of this movie yelling THUG LIFE! When you see it, you will know what I mean. ("Thug Life" is actually an acronym for "The Hate U Give Little Infants, F**Ks Everybody.").

Ok do you remember how you felt when Ricky dies in the alley towards the end of Boys in the Hood... yeah not this movie either.

Now to my real review... Sorry for toying with your emotions. But, I am in a mix of emotions coming out of this movie. My eyes may be a bit swollen so obviously no video review. I went through a mix of emotions with the main character. Most of the movie is through her eyes. A teen growing up in the hood going to a private school. Learning how to be two different people for both of her worlds. Not sure who she can show her true self to. Not sure, which is her true self. Coming of age is hard, but coming of age with this character - let us just say you reach all new levels of vulnerability. The acting by this young actress is truly amazing. The directing and writing... all I can say is bravo. If you watch this movie and you don't get it, maybe you just need to pay attention. Reach out and try to understand. Not saying everything is so black and white, brown or blue... But the hate you show around you, reaches our youth. Learn to be better, learn to show our youth better. Because they are watching, they are learning.
