Review of The Happytime Murders (2018) by Wayne K — 22 Nov 2018
A film so universally reviled that I almost felt compelled to watch it, The Happytime Murders looks like it was far more fun to make than it was to watch. The story comes from the dusty blueprint of every tired buddy cop movie, the script sounds like it was concocted by the worst combination of Adam Sandler, Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer, the lead character narrates thing we can either seeing happening on screen, or could have easily guessed, and the jokes sound they were copied off the wall of a grimy toilet cubicle.
Have you ever wanted to see a puppet ejaculate for 20+ seconds? Nope, and neither did I. The film is soulless, not even trying to be clever, witty or providing any reason for why it should exist, or why we should be watching it.
It desperately wants to make statements about discrimination, but the script isn't clever enough to make anything of them. It desperately wants to be edgy and adult, but its just crude and unpleasant.
It desperately tries to make us laugh, but more often than not it just made me groan. The plot is paper thin, and in an effort to compensate, the characters partake in what sounds like semi-improvised banter that was rightfully rejected in the writer's room but somehow found its way into the finished product.
It's a tragic waste of time, talent, money and stuffing. Jim Henson must be rolling in his grave.
