Review of The Happytime Murders (2018) by Max N — 22 Aug 2018
As a person growing up watching the Muppet I obviously had high expectations for The Happytime murders. Besides the Muppets, there's other great puppet inspired cinema and television like Crank Yankers and team America.
Both of these are phenomenal pieces of media that took puppet comedy to a whole new level. I was really hoping that Happytime murders will do the same thing. Well spoiler alert I was dead wrong. This movie is riddled with bad jokes, clichés, puns, and completely unnecessary profanity that doesn't add to the film.
Let me be crystal clear I f--king love profanity but this profanity served absolutely no purpose. It was as if the writers got together in a room and said "hey look lets like make a movie with puppets and just have them say the F word about 1000 times and that should be really funny right? Oh yeah and why don't we have them say a--hole and c-ck about another 900 times.
" This movie is also riddled with plagiarism. Two particular things stand out. There is a 100% word for word plagiarism in the first three minutes of this movie from the Wu-Tang Clan song "Method Man.
" If you listen to this song and then go watch the movie you will know exactly what I'm talking about. It is word for word plagiarism. Another is a sex scene amongst puppets where they tried to outdo the hilarious sex scene in Team America, done over 10 years ago.
Not only was Team America is way funnier but it was it also really original. This sex scene in this was not funny and a total blatant rip off. Did I laugh out loud in this movie? Yes a total of twice.
I counted. When it comes to the horrible puns, a particular scene stands out: there were decorative balls on an executive's table and the puppet detective Phil Phillips grabs one of the balls and throws it at the executive, knocking him out.
He then says I never thought I would knock someone out with their own balls. Hardy Harr Harr. Hand these writers a Oscar? So should you go see this movie? F-ck. No. This is garbage. This is the type of garbage that sits at the bottom of a dumpster on a hot day and has slime and dirty water covering it.
This movie stinks.
