Review of The Happytime Murders (2018) by Devaughn B — 23 Aug 2018
This is not the worst film of the year, but it certainly is not the best comedy of the year. This is a pretty mediocre black comedy puppet crime noir film from Brian Henson. Raunchy as hell, yes, and it offers only a few really good laughs, but not nearly enough for me.
More often than not I found myself silent or just rolling my eyes, but the energy in the auditorium overall was much higher. The crowd I saw this film with LOVED it, or at least got more from the comedy than I did.
Surprisingly I enjoyed the story a lot more than I expected to, and I truly cared for the characters and motivations. It got to a point that I forgot I was watching a black comedy and, for me it became solely puppet crime noir.
Melissa McCarthy and Maya Rudolph as the two main humans, and Bill Barretta as the main puppet, all of them have amazing chemistry together. Unfortunately this one just didn't do much for me by way of the comedy, which is what you would really want from this type of film.
