Review of The Happiness of the Katakuris (2002) by Leo K — 13 Apr 2008
Let me first say that Takashi Miike is one of the most bonkers and brilliant directors in the surreal/extreme cinema genre and that films like, Audition, Visitor Q and Ichi the Killer are some of the greatest titles in extreme cinema and brings a fresh and totally original new level of insanity to filiming.
That said, this film is not one of his finest moments, and whilst it no doubt bristles with the other worldly bizarreness that I know and love it doesn't work for me. Trying to explain why is a tricky one but some of the problems are down to the fact the story doesn't convince and whilst certainly amusing at times it feels like a joke that's convoluted its punchlines and goes on too long.
Not a bad film certainly, but nowhere near his finest.
