Review of The Happiest Millionaire (1967) by Sarah P — 11 Apr 2010
An interesting but not totally successful attempt by Disney to outdo MARY POPPINS; it may be lavish, but it doesn't have the charm, character, or music that makes POPPINS such a good film. Truth be told, it isn't without its merits.
Fred MacMurray is always good value, and Tommy Steele, whose brief attempt at breaking into American cinema was typified by this genial, goofy, rather dated musical, is a lot of fun to see. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast doesn't make much impression, and they are given little help by the dull script.
While the film lacks much narrative drive, and the characters aren't really interesting enough to make their exploits compelling, the expanse of the production and the entertaining (albeit mostly unmemorable) musical numbers make the 172-minute running time fairly easy going.
It's certainly worth a look for Disney die-hards and curiousity-seekers; those looking for purer entertainment should stick with POPPINS.
