Review of The Hangover Part II (2011) by Dylan M — 29 Mar 2015
1st viewing: When I finished The Hangover Part II, I thought to myself "That wasn't such a bad movie." However, as it sat and I thought about it for 30 minutes, I realize just how mediocre it was. The characters are more unlikeable, and at some times are just flat out jerks. As for the humor, while there are a few chuckles to be heard, the laughs rely more on shock value and just come off as gross. Plus, it doesn't help that this movie is literally 80% the same as it's predecessor. Both movies have the same basic outlines, and even some of same jokes. Overall, while the film isn't terrible, you're better off just sticking with the first one.
4/10.
2nd viewing: For the past seven months, I was convinced that I was never going to watch this movie again in my life. However, lately I've been cleaning out my Blu-Ray collection, but I figured I'd give it another fair go before trading it in (yes, I own this movie on Blu-Ray, I got it brand new for free with 2 dollars of store credit). Among watching it for the second time, I was very surprised to have actually somewhat enjoyed this movie. I made some fair points in my original review, and most of them still apply, but they didn't seem to bother me as much. I mean, the gross shock value still weighed the movie down some, but I enjoyed it more than I did the first time. I can see myself in the future turning it on in the background while trying to do something or after a long day. It's moved up from "icky and unfunny" to "guilty pleasure" in my book.
6/10.
