Review of The Hangover (2009) by Pierre-Luc G — 18 May 2013
When you are talking about "Painting the town red last night" these guys don't exactly do that. Instead they cover most of the town with puke, beer, piss, and butt ass naked Asians. Now I am all for a good time on the Vegas strip, but what these guys do in night would put a lot of rock stars to shame.
Of course I am talking about The Hangover which is a pretty funny comedy to say the least. So let me get this Summer of Blockbuster Reviews under way as I start this trilogy off right. This is like a bro movie, but without the bro.
They have to go back and solve this mystery as to what happened to their friend. Kind of like Dude Where's my Groom or Memento were they are working a backwards mystery. What really works is that they have a really solid narrative.
When they're working that mystery, you actually are really involved in the story and are trying to figure out what the hell they did last night. What I like about this is that this was directed by Todd Phillips who did Old School which is about a bunch of 40 something's trying to hold on to the good old days by partying just like in this movie.
But in the end they should know better than to just act their age, but they don't and now they pay the price. The people that got to work in this movie all work really well together like Bradley Cooper.
I always felt like he was playing a yuppie jackass and in here he plays the same role but he is more likeable. He's the guy who's just holding it all together. Zach Galifianakis is basically that man-child character who's kind of retarded, but he is there for most of the goofy laughter.
Ed Helms is so pussy whipped that he is stupid and yet he is making the most sense. Now to be fair, not everything in this movie is good like showing a penis or an ass for shock value. Also Heather Graham popping out only one boob.
...really? But I could care less for her nudity, much less being just a little too old. If she was ten years younger, then maybe she would have been more interesting to watch. Overall you can nit-pick at this kind of movie all you want, these types of movies are not for everybody, but I laughed my ass off and enjoyed the story from beginning to end.
This is why I give this film four out of five stars.
