Review of The Hangover (2009) by Khaled H — 29 Apr 2014
I am pleasantly surprised by the extent to which I enjoyed "The Hangover". However, like other recent cult films, such as "American Pie", "Anchorman" and "Borat", it has been elevated above it's standing by it's extreme popularity amongst the teenage male demographic.
Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis alongside Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, Jeffrey Tambor and Mike Tyson, "The Hangover" takes a premise of 3 men waking up after a big night with no memory of the events and many repercussions, and manages to tell the story while mostly avoiding gross-out gags or toilet humour.
Instead, it relies on one-liners and escalating situations, which are immensely more powerful comedic tools when used properly, and they come up with a fun, if not exactly ground-breaking, little film.
4 stars.
