The Handmaiden really defied all of my expectations. The cinematography, set designs and color palettes were gorgeous. The actors really made each of the characters human in all of their desperation, frustration, anger, perversion and hope.
The film OOZES and is LITERALLY about to BURST AT THE SEEMS with sex and sexual themes, but the depiction (IMO) are tasteful, respectful and thematically relevant. The film both makes you feel uncomfortable, but also elated (if that is the right word? Maybe, euphoric) at the end.
The mysteries are intricate and kept me absolutely fascinated throughout. I love The Handmaiden, and I would absolutely recommend it! Just be aware that there are VERY adult themes.
