Review of The Hamiltons (2006) by Christy H — 12 Jul 2007
As a huge horror fan I was obvioulsy really pumped to see After Dark's 8 Films To Die For. So as they are now all available on payperview I've obviously been going on a spending spree to give them all a try.
Sadly... after now seeing 4 of the 8 I must say I'm pretty dissappointed. Thus far the only film I actually REALLY enjoyed has been The Gravedancers. The other three, which now includes The Hamiltons as being the worst so far, have been barely mediocre.
Sure they are indie horror films so I guess my expectations shouldnt be so high. And perhaps the reason behind my dissappointment may be because the films of Stuart Gordon, John Carpenter, Dario Argento, Takeshi Miike, and Frank Hennenlotter are usually among the names of directors that come to mind when I think of QUALITY horror films.
Regardless, so far this horror anthology has not impressed as it claims to. The Hamiltons starts off intersting enough, regardless of the cheesy acting, and managed to keep me interested right up until the last 15 minutes.
But then it drops this outlandish twist which has had NO prior buildup other than 2 or 3 extremely subtle clues whic are never really focused on. As a result the big surprise simply comes off as being a lazy attempt at shock value.
And while unique in some senses... its nothing worth remembering for years to come...
