Review of The Hairdresser's Husband (1990) by Sarfaraz A — 05 Jul 2013
The Hairdresser's Husband (Le Mari de la coiffeuse) a French film directed by Patrice Leconte and co-written by Leconte and Claude Klotze.Starring Anna Galiena and Jean Rochefort. The film was nominated by BAFTA in the category of 'Best Foreign-Language Film' and Leconte won 'Prix Louis Delluc award.
Antoine (Jean Rochefort) narrates his story about his childhood obsession with local female hairdresser and his ultimate promise to marry a hairdresser - to fulfill his childhood dream - Antoine now in his 50s marries a hairdresser and remains with her at saloon throughout the day. He dances to Middle-Eastern tone (composed by Michael Nyman) to cheer people who are quite shy of getting haircut - Antoine's wife is charming and happy with her new life, this also scares her to death if anything, ever went wrong -.
Excellent locations, sober characters, packed with hilarious scenes and dialogues. It is tantalizing really, - although Leconte needed to give broader perspective about reason behind suicide of Antoine's wife, (the one argued is too heavy to lift) - Nevertheless it is worth 'a-go!
