Review of The Guns of Navarone (1961) by Marc H — 16 Aug 2008
My dad took me to the pictures to see this...and that didn't happen that often! So, what was so special? It's a good war film based on a book by Akistair Maclean and features 'old school' acting from the likes of Peck, Quinn and Quayle.
You feel yourself rooting for the 'goodies', of course, and some of the scenery is breath-taking but, by 21st century standards, I guess this is pretty pedestrian stuff.
Nevertheless, I wouldn't want to se a remake - this, like so many others of its day, stands as a testament to a bygone age - an age of David Niven and James Robertson-Justice...an age when stars smoked endlessly just so they'd have something to do with their hands...and the fact most of the cast succumbed to cancer is neither here nor there!
