Review of The Gunman (2015) by Michael P — 18 Mar 2015
Penn plays an assassin that loses his love over a kill in 2006 Congo. Move forward to today and he is back in the Congo drilling wells for an NGO to atone for his prior sins. Unfortunately, some others have decided that he needs to be erased so we start a multi country chase where Penn racks up the body count.
Penn has an impressive physique for his age and goes to pains to show it off however he is looking his age and the story doesn't hold together. Idris Elba is wasted in a minor supporting role and one wonders if much of his screen time ended up on a cutting room floor. Javier Bardem plays the jealous doctor that set Penn up and then married his girl. He redeems himself by intentionally getting shot in the head.
Overall it was not an inspiring movie and you might wish to wait until it shows up for free on Netflix.
