Review of The Gumball Rally (1976) by Aj V — 17 Oct 2010
The first and in my view the bset of the cross America race films.
What makes the film work is the cast of quirky and outrageous characters that director Chuck Bail has assembled.
The premise is simple a straight road race from New York to La with no rules.
During the race we get Raul Julia as Franco an Italian Racing Driver who loves fast cars and Women, two old gents in a Mercedes ,Gary Busey as a good old boy with an annoying whistle, and best of all Harvey Jason as the mad biker Lapchick who gets some of the films most memorable moments.
The cars also add to the films sense of fun and the stunts are very well executed and never boring.
The film used to be on TV all the time and maybe thats why I had to own a copy and im glad I did buy a copy as its still a good film.
