Review of The Guilt Trip (2012) by Tom R — 09 May 2013
(3 Stars) What's really shocking about The Guilt Trip is how not awful it is... it's not really good, but it's so unoffensive and bland that it's hard to hate. There is enough chemistry between mom (Barbara Streisand) and son (Seth Rogen) for the movie to be mildly entertaining. And I know there aren't very many, but there are a few funny parts with (gasp) a few tender moments.
That's about all the positives with the film. It's a road trip film with many ridiculous setups, jokes you can see miles away, and ludicrous plotting. But like The Big Year or Larry Crowne, I feel like this is a less zany comedy for older people, evidenced by the casting of Streisand. I think a lot of younger people expect an extreme Seth Rogen comedy, which this is not. I rented The Guilt Trip and that's probably the best way to watch it if you're under 40 years old.
