Review of The Guilt Trip (2012) by Orlando O — 01 May 2013
The Guilt Trip is a comedy drama road trip film that has a good chemistry between the two leads, although it lacked any laughs and filled with more annoying moments throughout. Andrew Brewster ( Seth Rogen) is a inventor who is trying to sell his product with many destinations that he has to go through.
He invites his mother Joyce (Barbra Streisand) to tag along with him on the road trip. Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand chemistry on screen was the only positive thing about the movie. The movie had some funny moments within the first half of the movie.
Unfortunately, the humor started being more annoying than funny. Streisand portrayed one of those overbearing mothers which was entertaining until the movie progressed and it was getting old quick. Barbra Streisands performance felt like she was just portraying herself, and did not need to give much effort.
There was barely any story that just focused on Rogens character trying to sell his product in distant locations, and trying to find his mothers past love interest in the very end. The script barely had any potential and lacked any characterization between Rogen and Streisand characters besides them having their own dramatic moments and having a good time in events.
Overall, The Guilt Trip does feel like a very long road trip that did not have any potential with a bad script that never really went anywhere from lacking characterization and being humorless.
