Everything I love about simple yet stylish, slightly off-the-wall thriller films. The word is 'classic' not 'retro' and certainly not '80s' - regardless of what you might think you are hearing.
The synthesizer soundtrack is mostly contemporary music that should serve to reinforce this idea of a tradition in art rather than some kind of a pastiche. To only talk in terms of this superior 21st century 'throwback Thursday' mentality is to deny 'The Guest' the credit it deserves for creating a world that is an amalgamation of the present (whatever that is supposed to be) and the last 30-40 years of our collective memories.
'A Fantastic Fear of Everything' did something similar with it's oscillating 1970s-2010s East London setting and I think 'House of the Devil' would have been a slightly better film had it tried the same rather than so accurately mimic the feel of 80s horror.
