Review of The Guest (2014) by Gautham R — 06 Aug 2015
Boasting a fitting and exciting sound track, 'The Guest' captive my attention for all 1 hour and 39 minutes of it's play time. Admittedly, a good 36 of those minutes were spent captivated by Dan Steven's rugged good looks and "Badass" attitude.
The film explores many subtle themes-- while the central plot fits effectively into the 'Thriller' mould, sub-plots further explore issues as varied as Familial Disagreement, bullying, and drug abuse.
The soundtrack that I just previously lauded forgoes the typically string-and-percussion trope of thriller films, instead choosing a hybrid of late 70's british New Wave and Analogue Techno. As a musician, I found the way the soundtrack was woven into the thematic development quite satisfying: at one point, a character creates a "mix" of OST songs for the lead character.
Exciting, Cerebral, Engaging, Sexy are all adjectives that I would use to describe any of the scenes from Adam Wingard's "The Guest". Five. Stars.
