Review of The Guest (2014) by Bradley G — 24 Apr 2016
The Guest effectively pays homage to action and horror films of the 80's, but does so in a way that is inspired rather than derivative. It's incredibly predictable, however, it's clear that the intent was not to break new ground, but to shine new light on various tropes in classic films.
The transition from ominous drama to action and ultimately horror/slasher made for an interesting genre blend. Unlike Adam Wingard's previous film, You're Next, which worked to avoid and practically mock the cliches of horror, The Guest embraces the staples of the genre, but portrays them with a style of it's own.
