Review of The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) by Jane L — 10 Aug 2018
The Netflix film is a solid attempt to remain true to the roots of the beloved novel. Sadly, the screenplay only scratched the surface of the depth and breadth that enraptured loyal fans like myself to read TGLAPPS more than once.
The risk of forbidden love and the tragic cost of humanity during wartime did not have the punch in the gut reveal as in the book. The acting overall was sublime. However despite the actors full embodiment of their literary templates, they were not given the length of runway to sell the story arc.
Obviously no expense was spared in costume, sets and setting - so why on earth not include full scale storytelling that compels this tender tragedy? I wanted to be satisfied and left the table hungry for more.
