Review of The Guardian (2006) by Bobby L — 15 May 2010
Well, I was entertained through most of the movie. and for what it turned out to be it wasn't too horrible. however, once you consider what it was TRYING to be, it fails miserably. Kevin Costner hasn't done too many good movies since DWW and he continues his streak with this one. this movie is obviously Ashton Kutcher's attempt to make a movie that would get him into the "serious actor" category. even many talented people can't do that take Robin Williams for example. people think of him for movies like Aladdin and Mrs. Doubtfire. stuff like that where he plays a funny role. however people forget his movies like Good Will Hunting (where he got his Best Supporting Actor OSCAR!!!) and Dead Poets Society. anyway, this movie was trying to be good but it really wasn't. I could have told you 5 minutes into the movie how it was going to end. the screenplay was absolutely horrid too. overall it was just this pathetic attempt at a film and it tried to be too much that ti wasn't. I still thought that it was an entertaining film and I could have potentially liked it if I could turn off the analytical part of my brain (which I can't).
TRIVIA TIME: 1. Clancy Brown, who plays Captain Hadley in The Guardian also played a different Captain Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption.
2. The opening story of the helo rescue gone bad was loosely based on a real event that occurred August 7, 1981. The crew of CG1471 from Airsta Kodiak was responding to a distress call of a fishing vessel near Prince William Sound. As the crew attempted to hoist the survivors of the boat, a wave hit the tail of CG1471 causing the helo to crash into the seas. A painting named "So Others May Live" hangs on CG Airsta Kodiak depicting the rescue.
