Review of The Guardian (2006) by Steph S — 27 Dec 2012
Mini Review 5 - The Guardian.
Plot:
Top rescue swimmer Ben Randall (Kevin Costner) is totally shaken up after a fatal rescue attempt consumes his best pal. A head coach position at a Coast Guard training school is offered to him as a measure of reprieve and he painfully accepts it. Ben encounters Jake Fischer @Ashton Kutcher, a gifted swimmer, who volunteers for Coast Guard training shunning several other glorified career paths. Rest of the story is about Ben crafting Jake's career in the wake of their strong emotional bonding.
Positives:
--> Kevin Costner's extremely natural performance.
--> Intense depiction of coast guard activities and various challenges they encounter. Several real people used for the film give it more authentic look.
Negatives:
--> Ashton Kutcher seems out of place.
--> Lagging story line towards the end with an overdose of sentiment.
