Review of The Guard (2011) by Tanvir M — 03 Jan 2012
This is what a comedy for adults should be like, not full of toilet humor or titillation for grossing one out, rather razor sharp and dry witted bantering to savor and enjoy. We get a taste of black Irish humor from the brother of the guy who brought out another instant favorite, 'In Bruges'.
Brendan Gleeson plays an unapologetically racist character, who has amoral taste in women, looks down on the black people, but also an humanist who would go any distance necessary to do his job. A pot pourri of contradiction, but unmistakably human, this is a great showcase for Gleeson's acting chops, and even an accomplished actor like Cheadle pales in comparison to him.
Hugely enjoyable, giving rise to more quiet chuckles than I remember from any other recent movie, this is a gem to savor and enjoy.
