Review of The Guard (2011) by Jeffrey M — 06 Apr 2012
It's funny enough to keep it interesting and enjoyable, but not nearly as funny as other similarly toned comedies (It's no In Bruges). Brendan Gleeson, ideal for this sort of comedy, is well matched with Don Cheadle, but the material doesn't seem to fully utilize either, with an uneven script. The Irish flair sometimes takes the viewer out, we don't fully understand the European dynamics at work nor the accents. Still, the chemistry and effective dead-pan humor generally overcome its flaws.
3/5 Stars.
