Review of The Grudge (2004) by Casselise R — 24 Apr 2011
With the recent spate of horror films plucked from the twisted dark depths of the Japanese horror genre, The Grudge is in good company with its counterparts. Movie remakes such as 'The Ring' and 'Dark Water' stand alongside The Grudge as siblings in a niche genre.
Unfortunately, the siblings are a little more grown up.
Had the Grudge been the first Japanese remake to hit Western Cinema, then it may have been able to tattoo itself in the minds of the movie going public as a kind of trend setter for a new horror niche, but I unfortunately do believe that viewers went to see this film expecting it to be like The Ring.
If your main concern is fear and suspense, then you will get it here no problems. However, if you are looking for the brilliance we have come to expect from Japanese Cinema, then you may be disappointed. This isn't to say the writing isn't still intelligent, because it definitely shits all over the tired repetitive scream fests we have come to expect from regular horror, but don't expect it to be as good as The Ring.
RECOMMENDATIONS.
Watch it if you liked: The ring.
Don't watch it if: You are paranoid, cant deal with sinister children, are prone to nightmares, can't cope with supernatural themes, monsters, ghosts, frightened of the dark, some devout Christians will not cope.
Children: Don't be stupid.
