Review of The Grudge (2004) by Richard H — 21 Oct 2010
The fractured timeline narrative simply doesn't work and seems to be only deployed to try and conceal how light on the plot is. Too much was shown (shoddily) too soon so the 'scares' are of diminishing returns.
I didn't for one minute believe the Japanese detective, who knew the history of the house, would put one foot inside it. The rules of the world also didn't seem consistent - periodic, random events thrown in for a calculated shock value. But the number of different tactics used by the film-makers worked against this.
Ultimately Sarah Michelle Gellar had little to do and I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters to care what happened to them. Disappointing all round.
