Review of The Grey (2012) by Ws W — 23 Jan 2015
How could the critics give this sorry movie 76%. It was so lame I almost walked out. Nothing the men or the wolves did in this movie was true to nature, nor very compelling. The writing and directing were quite horrible.
For example: They had five or six shotgun shells from which they made bang sticks, saying they would kill the wolves one-by-one; why didn't they take any with them when they started walking? Why did he have shotgun shells with him in a sniper rifle case? Why did they let him on with a rifle and live ammunition; and someone else on with a lighter? And knives? (Some could have come from the luggage, sure; but that many?) Why did they lie face up in the blizzard freezing their noses off? Why did the only black character in the movie have to be the most afraid and weakest, and die early on the hike out? Why was there only an ounce or two of jet fuel in the wings of the plane, when the plane crashed so fast the pilots couldn't have emptied the tanks? Why was the first living person to be eaten (alive) by the wolves one of the very few women on the plane? How could the guy grab the wolf's head from over the fire with his bare hands to cut it off? Why didn't they cover up (especially with the hoods they had) while hiking out in a storm? Why were the only survivors of the crash unscathed (for the most part); where were the survivors with broken bones, etc.
? With so many bodies to feed on, why would so many wolves chase down six hikers for so many miles? How could there be that many wolves together out in the middle of freezing nowhere (how could they find enough food)? Since when does a pack of wolves attack from all directions at once, like a bunch of Indians in a bad western? And howl for dramatic effect, then stop on a dime? How could a guy fall 40-50 down through the breaking branches of a tree, hit the ground hard, and only have a sore knee? How could two or three men (at different times) be attacked by a lone wolf and only get minor cuts and scratches? Since when would a single wolf attack six men at a camp fire? Why did they only show signs of being cold when they were trying to sleep/stay alive during the blizzard that night? Why, when they discovered they were in a logged area did they not look for a logging road? What's the likelihood he'd stumble into the wolves' den at the end? And, in such a poorly-written Hollywood movie, why didn't a helicopter save him at the last minute?
