Review of The Grey (2012) by Hunter H — 12 Jan 2013
Great movie, quite suspenseful. Liam Neeson's great, as always, and what surprised me most is that even the supporting cast was great as well. I find it quite funny how three of the guys were or will have been a villain in a comic book movie: Liam Neeson was Ra's al Ghul from Batman Begins, James Badge Dale will be Coldblood in Iron Man 3, and Frank Grillo will be Crossbones in the sequel to Captain America.
Speaking of funny, I have a theory: Liam Neeson was cast in this movie because the wolves were too scared to go up against Chuck Norris. The plane crash scene, as with the Dubai tower scene from M:I 4, is WAY more intense in the movie when you watch it, despite part of it being shown in the trailer.
Plus, the plane crash scene in this movie is to planes what the train crash scene in Super 8 was to trains: INTENSE. Now, most of the complaints come from people who like the movie overall, but are NOT huge fans of the ending.
Me, I had no problems with it. Sometimes, ambiguity is the way to go for an effective ending (you'll see what I mean when you watch this movie). In other words, I actually really liked the ending (though I won't spoil it).
I'm sure some of those who were complaining about the ending to THIS movie hated the one-two punch of January movies with a crappy ending that they got from watching this AND The Devil Inside (in my opinion, the ending of THAT movie is probably WAY WORSE; it's one of the reasons I was smart enough to avoid it.
..! THAT, and I heard it sucked...!). While it is probably a trend to throw movies onto the screen for people to see in January, most of which end up being mediocre (or WORSE), with this movie, it's probably the exception, not the rule, because this one actually ended up being GOOD.
