Review of The Grey (2012) by Sean C — 16 Jan 2013
It's the Liam Neeson show from start to finish and the posters, marketing, etc. never made any pretense about it. He does wonderful work here, to be sure. However, it is so painfully honest that everyone else is fodder for the wolves that there is virtually no suspense.
Also, the noncommittal ending just seemed like the latest in a long line of Inception knockoffs. What do directors these days have against story resolution? "The Grey" is far from a bad movie; the first half is particularly enjoyable.
The problem is that the movie actually slows down to a crawl as characters are picked off rather than gathering steam, which seems to spit in the face of survival drama, don't you think?
