Review of The Grey (2012) by Paul B — 28 Jan 2013
Some people have viewed this film as a metaphor for the depression the lead character experiences prior to having to battle his way back to society after a plane crash lands him & other survivors in a snowy wasteland in the kill zone of some very hungry wolves.
If it is that, it's clumsy & poorly executed, so a good job it isn't really. What it is is tough yet brilliantly staged survival horror movie with a few existential debates thrown in that work exceptionally well.
The action is relentless & perfectly pitched, the characters well drawn & believable & the set-pieces stunning. Neeson is truly magnificent in this role & it's this belief in the character and a smart script that raises this well above average.
The courage of all convictions is perfectly realised in a solid & tough ending too.
