Review of The Grey (2012) by Julie T — 25 Mar 2013
Starts well, several men are stranded in a frozen wilderness, due to a plane crash, their only company a pack of hungary wolves. Liam Neeson puts in a great performance as the wolf extermination expert, and the acting is excellent from his supporting cast, except may I say from the wolves who are pretty CGIed and not very realistic.
My problem with this is there seems to be precious little survival instinct or common sense on show. One man stands guard when there are plenty of survivors so that mistake soon plays out as you'd expect, then despite lots of nice branches and copious supply of hunting knives no one invents the spear by joining the two together, really ? And everyone trudges about well spaced out when it's obvious to me a mere girlie that they only have a hope if acting as a tight unit ( wealding afore mentioned spears) .
Why not be carrying as many sparpened sticks as they can carry, instead of rucksacks that seem to contain nothing? Well nothing of any use apparently. So well made, well acted but either most men , even wolf experts, don't have great survival instincts or written by a writer who doesn't, when logic escapes a film is sort of spoiled ,which is a shame as Liam Neeson put his heart and soul in, wonder if he queried why his character hadn't worked out how to attach a hunting knife to a stick? Bet he did.
