Review of The Grey (2012) by Walter M — 25 Jul 2013
In "The Grey," an airplane carrying oil workers back to civilization in Anchorage crashes in the middle of the wilderness, leaving eight survivors. Wait, make that seven. And then the local wolves realize thay will not have to order out that night and start putting on their human bibs. Realizing their situation is somewhere past dire, Ottway(Liam Neeson) thinks they might have a better chance if they all make a break for the tree line.
To be honest, it is refreshing for a current Hollywood movie like "The Grey" to go back to the basics with its man versus nature conflict, with more than enough symbolism to go around. Weirdly enough for a movie like this, the highlights come more from the quiet scenes than the action ones. That still does not help in allowing for the audience to care about the other men, making this pretty much all about Ottway. Maybe, you could say the movie is supposed to be about Ottway finding out that his fellow men are not as bad he once thought, but that's still not really enough to keep things interesting.
