Review of The Grey (2012) by Jeffrey R — 07 Sep 2013
A refreshing wilderness adventure where man undergoes an epic struggle of survival, healing and faith.
Neeson delivered an outstanding performance and was supported by a solid cast and powerful soundtrack.
The film compiled some very memorable scenes, including those with Ottway and his wife, his near suicide and his den encounter with the alpha-male.
My only serious point of contention was the very redundant post-credit ending (with Ottway lying on the wolf). I found the pre-credit scene's art, acting and camera work to be quite fulfilling and magical, providing an elegant balance between power and closure. What's wrong with leaving a bit of imagination to the viewer? But instead, the magic I was given became diluted by a four second Hollywood conclusion.
That said, "The Grey" is still a gem with both its Blu-ray and soundtrack sitting on my shelf.
PS: My review and rating were based on the Director's Cut.
