Review of The Grey (2012) by Juli N — 19 Feb 2014
The first time I saw this film was with family, instead of seeing it thru my eyes I honed in on their reactions and saw it thru their eyes and was disappointed with the film!
I decided to give this film another shot and see it on my terms! It was like seeing a completely different picture! There was depth to the film, it had meaning! You see beyond the beautiful landscape, beyond the story of survival, incredible actors, there was a simple yet profound message in the poem John Ottway's father wrote!
Once more into the fray.
Into the last good fight I'll ever know.
LIve and die on this day.
Live and die on this day.
Basically the poem suggests every day you wake up and give that day everything you've got! That night you sleep (Die) and tomorrow you do the same!
John Ottway stopped heeding and living by this credo! He gave up the grand fight and ran away from life, and ran away from himself! He even flirted with the notion of dying!
Until one day life happened! It got up in his face and forced him to make a choice! Stand up and fight and live or lay down and die! Facing death head on John choose to fight with all his might!
Whether it's life or death knocking on your door you should answer it just the same standing with fists raised, ready to do battle!
I'm glad I gave this film another look, I was NOT disappointed! The brief scene after the scrolling credits gives me hope that one day there might be a sequel!
