Review of The Grey (2012) by Daniel R — 11 Sep 2014
At some point during this film, you are forced to reevaluate your preconceived notions of the plot, etc. Instead of purely relating the physical act of survival, there are actual depths to the characters which are somewhat explored.
There is also a philosophical undertow to the actions and dialogue. I can see how at its' inception, this film seemed to satisfy a need for a film which does not simply nod at the players and carry them along the conveyor belt of predictable demises and cliched last words.
A lot of people have complained that this film has a disappointing ending; either they didn't watch the scene after the end-credits, or they are the type of people who need things to be made plain and simple.
I am glad that the director did not choose to elaborate further; the emotional impact of the final scenes is what satisfyingly tips this film over the edge of 'thought-provoking'. This film succeeds in being a thoughtful piece of film-making, whilst managing to pay homage to the brutality and savagery of nature.
