Review of The Grey (2012) by Jeremyp — 02 Feb 2012
This is a darkly told and darkly shot story about the fate of survivors of an air crash in Alsaka hunted by wolves. Only one of them is an expert at wolves and hunting (LIam Neeson, of course) so he becomes the alpha male, after putting down all challenges.
Yep it's a metaphor, and it predicts the ending. He's suicidal and depressed, and recently widowered, but the survival trek gives him a goal. The wolf attacks are often lighning fast and full of ear splitting growling and snarling which serve to keep the audience awake.
The director teases by making the attacks occur randomly and unpredicably, and for a change the ending is unpredictable (although I did predict accurately the 2 last survivors, I couldn't rest on my laurels).
If you want to enjoy the movie don't ask yourself if the wolves behavior is accurate.
