Review of The Green Knight (2021) by Trues — 22 Aug 2021
Pros: beautiful scenery, Dev Patel.
Cons: BORING, pretentious, empty metaphors, no character development, nonsensical plot, Sir Gawain is completely useless and a coward and shows a serious lack of judgement and intelligence throughout the entire movie (no development, no hero's journey), hard to care about any of the characters because of the lack of development and their lack of likeable attributes, superfluous scenes that make no sense and don't add to the movie, blunt metaphorical scenes that just try too hard to be artsy, empty symbolism, a lot of inversion symbolism plus sac religious symbolism, did I mention it is extremely slow and boring? Also you can't even hear or understand the intro. What was that lady even mumbling? Jesus. Did they completely forget that people were gonna try to view the movie? It seems that way.
TLDR: the movie had potential in so many ways (because there's SOOO MANY GLARING FLAWS), but completely forgot about the audience. This movie is narcissistic like most pretentious art pieces are. If you liked this movie, that's fine, but I really have to ask if you have you forgotten what makes a great movie, because I think you're being overly forgiving of the MAJOR FLAWS in so much of this movie and the story telling capability of the director (OR MAJOR LACK THERE OF).
This movie doesn't require you to use your brain. It would make more sense to someone on hallucinogenic drugs than someone sober using their brain properly. It's a bad sign when a paid critic says "This movie makes me feel like I'm on psilocybin mushrooms." So, is that the only way someone can get something out of it? It's not good. It's just not.
