Review of The Green Inferno (2013) by Tracy S — 26 Sep 2015
After over a year on the shelf due to numerous controversies, director Eli Roth's new cannibal film The Green Inferno comes to theaters and in my honest opinion this movie will probably go down as a cult classic, but not for any good reason.
This movie is something different to say the least. The subject matter is so taboo for today's culture that the minute you hear about it you instantly become intrigued. Unfortunately this film is actually terrible to say it nicely.
Lets start with what this movie did right and that is the plausible plot and the practical effects. The story here is intriguing to say the least. A group of activists go to Peru to stop demolition of a forrest however they run into a snag when their plane crash lands into an area occupied by a cannibalistic tribe and thus we have the set up for a very disgusting movie.
Eli Roth is not a very good director however his ideas are always interesting with the Hostel franchise being his most notorious films. The Green Inferno is no different, you genuinely believe that *most* of this movie could happen.
Not only that but Roth has a genuine eye for gore. The gore in this movie is stomach turning making this one of the most violent films I have seen. The effects of the gore are completely realistic and not once did I ever think that this was fake.
This is sadly where the movie's good qualities end. The main downfall of this movie is that this is supposed to be a horror film, however this is one of the funniest horror films in recent memory.
The situations that occur in this film are nothing short of ludicrous and the delivery by the actors doesn't help at all. We have a truly sickening film here that you are constantly laughing at until the very end.
There is no sense of logic in this film. The protagonist goes on this trip for no reason and the activists in this film are some of the dumbest people ever put to film. Part of this is indeed the script and dialogue's fault.
The delivery of the sudden deaths are down right hilarious and the actors here are so terrible you make fun of them while watching the movie. There is honestly one scene in this film where I was crying because the situation is so outrageous I was laughing myself into tears.
The acting here is absolutely horrible with the only notable name in the film being Daryl Sabrara who you might remember form the Spy Kids franchise. Every actor here is so over the top or so melodramatic you just wait for them to die, and thankfully that all go in hilarious ways.
In a horror movie review I shouldn't be commenting on the amount of comedy here, but the thing is that this is unintentionally funny. This movie should have been terrifying and haunting because there are actually cannibal tribes out there but here you just don't care and you end up watching this for the hilarious deaths and the stupidity of the characters.
Overall The Green Inferno is a terrible film. It fails on nearly every front except for directing. The effects are good and this is actually shot very well. However I am going to say that if you do not like gorey, torture porn then this really isn't the movie for you.
It is very graphic and disgusting. However, if you want a movie to sit back and laugh at then The Green Inferno is the film to watch. It is laughably horrible and you will probably want to rewatch it just for the laughs.
