Has there ever been a director more hilariously ill-suited to the movie they're making than Michel Gondry with this movie? Gondry's lackadaisacal, dreamlike approach is tossed out the window here, and he seems to think that exciting action means unreasonably unlikeable characters and so.
..much...noise. Only once (during an appropriately trippy dream sequence) does Gondry's skill come through, but by then it's far too late.
