Review of The Green Hornet (2011) by Wes M — 23 Apr 2012
"I was born in Shanghai. You know Shanghai?" "Yeah, I love Japan." Nice, a Dumb & Dumber joke. It was pretty amusing and entertaining for an action comedy, but a lot of things about it kinda bugged me.
Ok, I liked Seth and Evan's script, I feel like they're usually a good tag team (Superbad, Pineapple Express), but I don't think Michel Gondry should have been the director. Now, I love Michel, I mean I LOVE him.
Mainly for Eternal Sunshine, but this was almost too chaotic for him. Either that, or his talent was wasted on what should have been a simpler action film. I didn't like his style for the action scenes.
Leave the ramping, close-ups, and highlighting crap to someone who's good at it, like Zack Snyder. Also, he borrowed the one thing from Ang Lee's Hulk that was cool, the multiple split-screen camera thing (err, yea, sorry, dunno what it's called.
It's when you see 20 different scenes at the same time, camera just keeps branching out). It just didn't work. In fact, it bothered me. Oh, and this is just personal preference, but I wished Kato was played by Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, or someone with real martial arts skills.
Not this guy, Jay Chouâ¦who's just an actor. But enough ranting. Most of the jokes are good, some were a little over-done. You should give this a try, whether you're a Seth Rogen fan, Michel Gondry fan, or Green Hornet fan, or just wanna kill 2 hours.
I'd like to see the tv show from the 1960s. But we all know why I wanna see that *cough* Bruce Lee! *cough*.
