A serious and issue-driven film that feels a tad self-important and worthy - which would not be a problem had the lead character been better and more sympathetically written, (he seems so passive, he's just a bit too perfect/naive to be true?), and behaved less irrationally or foolish (bordering on incompetent) at times.

But the film does have some redeeming qualities such as a great (and starry) supporting cast when they are able to break out delivering some much needed humour and comedic release for the audience. Ultimately, the cliched metaphors (storm approaching as the roof is being renovated, anyone?), the cartoonishly evil bad guy (not only is he a homophobic redneck but a wife beater and more.

..) and the (unintentionally camp and funny) climax mean that a star or so must be docked for its crime.
