Review of The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) by Angela B — 31 Jan 2007
Is it a sin to make a bad movie about Jesus? I mean even Athiests can appreciate a good Jesus movie every now and then right? Not that I'm an Athiest or anything. Okay maybe I don't go to church anymore, but hey back to the review, okay.
The Greatest Story Ever Told - 3.5/10.
Director - George Stevens.
Starring - Max Von Sydow, Charlton Heston, Dorothy McGuire, Robert Loggia, Claude Rains, etc, etc, etc.
I'm really not sure what George Stevens is doing here. I mean he's already got a good story, right? So what went wrong here? Oh we can start with the casting, or I should say miscasting. In order to tell "The Greatest Story Ever Told" Stevens felt like it would be a good idea to include virtually any name star of the day (this would be the sixties) willing to be included in this film. I mean who can say no to Jesus? So along with the main players we have a plethora of cameos from some of the era's biggest stars. Need a list? John Wayne, Sidney Poitier, Pat Boone, Telly Savales, Martin Landau, Donald Pleasance, Shelley Winters, Angela Lansbury, Roddy McDowell, Jamie Farr, Carroll Baker, Victor Buono, Robert Blake, John Considine, David McCallum. A misfire of Biblical proportions.
