Review of The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) by Ariella P — 06 Nov 2007
Highly bloated, overlong extravaganza about the backstage goings-on at the circus. Charleton Heston and Betty Hutton have a on agaon-off again affair that heats up when a world famous acrobat (Cornel Wilde!) goes on board.
In the meanwhile, Jimmy Stewart plays a clown with a mysterious past and Vean Helflin (!) plays a jealous elephant trainer. Somewhat campy fun made bloated by the never ending commentary about what makes the circus great and (yes) the circus acts.
You need to enjoy at least one of these factors in order to appreciate the film in any way. Oh yeah, there's a pretty nifty train crash scene at the end, but really, are you going to stay for that?
