Review of The Great Yokai War (2005) by Dave F — 04 Apr 2008
I wish I had seen this movie before Pan's Labyrinth, I would've enjoyed it more(and given it 1/2 more star). Although some of the characters were wonderful I couldn't help feel like this is a lower budget version of Pan's with some left over costumes from the Power Rangers TV show as extras.
The little fuzzy Yokai (Shin Rubber?) handpuppet bugged me. This movie is like if Guillermo Del Toro and Tim Burton had a Japanese love child while on LSD. Lotta fun but I can see why I didn't hear about it until it was on Cable.
Terry Gilliam's 1988 classic "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" tells almost the same story (the passage from childlike innocence and creativity into adulthood), with a seemingly lower budget but much more heart than either.
