Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Edward B — 18 Feb 2017
I thought this was a great movie.
It has believable characters and gorgeous cinematics, as well as good acting. Presumably it's a bit of a stylized representation of the romance of being a (seventeenth?) century chinese soldier on the wall, but, hey, it's Hollywood. It was really well done.
It had good humor, plausible friendship, heroism, and romantic tension.
I thought the monsters were fascinating, with a twist in that the "queen" communicated with her "soldiers" through some kind of vibrating whatsis. I thought that was quite creative by the writers. I also noticed that they had a Chinese stylistic bent... not exactly Cloverfield or Godzilla.
Definitely see this movie, you won't regret it. I'll definitely be seeing it again.
It looked like they left open the idea of a sequel, though I'm not sure where they'd go with it from here... I mean, are they going to use a "greater wall?" :-). Anyway, good movie.
