Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Doyle R — 18 Feb 2017
This movie was great. A great movie to watch with my friends. Don't believe the reviews. If you read that one customer reviews that was 6 paragraphs, it's quite obvious he/she doesn't like to have any fun while watching movies, is possibly racist and sexist, and is a tryhard.
Sure, it doesn't have the deep characters but in a movie like this, you're just there to watch for FUN. All these people complaining about a generic plot don't see that it just doesn't matter. So the main character William is on the search for black powder, worth a fortune back in Europe. He and his companions are traveling in what seems to be the Gobi dessert when they come upon the Great Wall of China when escaping raiders. They immediately get caught in a battle between the Chinese defenders and the alien army coming in to overtake the wall. (Insert generic battle between defending warriors and an enormous army) This is where the visuals take you away. Not just the CGI either. The sight of thousands of soldiers creating a formation is just eye candy. And they're color coded. The first battle is a great treat. Fun to watch and exciting. The weapons the Chinese use are very interesting to watch.
Then after some rest for the characters after the first battle, one side of the wall gets ambushed and then suddenly Commander Lin Mae is in charge of the entire wall. The next battle takes place with a huge blanket of fog over the wall. Yet another very interesting and fun battle with new weapons and a new objective: capture one of the beasts alive. The Chinese are forced to use their secret weapon in this battle: black powder. The westerners have their first glimpse of the power of the powder and the objective was completed.
That's all I'll say but believe me it was a very fun movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. This is one of those movies that'll make your inner 9 year old very happy. The white characters in a Chinese movie don't create too many problems, as their characters are just as out of place in the setting as the actors are. The movie never gets boring and always has some humor to go along with it. Don't believe the reviewers. This movie won't bore you but will entertain you. Don't be one of those people that won't watch a movie just because it's mindless action. Worth the 2 hours and worth the ticket. All I regret is not watching it in 3D.
