Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Stuart M — 19 Feb 2017
I went in expecting it to be dreck but I actually really liked it. Sure, there were some odd bits. The Chinese costumes were so fantastical they'd have felt overdone in WoW (and they were color-coordinated too!).
The emotional journey never quite feels real (a common problem with epics) and the backstory for the Nameless Order is frustratingly undeveloped. But the monsters looked really cool, the action scenes were great, and the performances were generally good.
I'm actually thrilled to see Pedro Paschal in more films. He's just as charming here as he was in GoT. And Matt Damon is always good for it. The Chinese cast is oddly less impressive. Apart from Andy Lau, they don't really leave much of an impression.
And the cinematography is amazing. It's renewed my desire to see China's Gobi Desert. Overall, I appreciated the journey and enjoyed the ride while it lasted. Well worth seeing.
