Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Ryan F — 19 Feb 2017
The Great Wall is director Zhang Jimou's American film debut. Hence while visually it exhibits a vibrant and colorful aesthetic, the story is garbage and very similar to that Keanu Reeves movie where he battled a witch-dragon.
Matt Damon (the only reason to greenlight this) stars as a Western of perhaps Celtic descent interloper trying to obtain gunpowder to bring back to Europe. One night a strange creature attacks his gang's campsite and he slays the beast.
Unsure what it is, he brings in to a clan who imprison him as a thief. But then mythical monsters attack and he proves himself worthy. While antiheroes are great characters, they should remain shady rather than transform to noble humans.
Imagine the scene at the hangar in Casablanca if Rick was completely noble.
